5 Steps for a Focused B2B Prospecting Session
A prospecting session should produce a small set of accounts with a clear reason for further work. Five steps can keep the research focused and prevent the easiest-to-find contact information from deciding which businesses enter the pipeline.
1. Limit the account question
Choose an offer, service area and type of organisation for this session. Write the exclusion criteria before searching. If the search produces mostly unsuitable businesses, revise it rather than relaxing the criteria just to increase the count.
2. Identify functions; 3. record evidence
Find the business function likely to understand the problem before looking for a person. Record the source and date for facts about the company. Keep a possible implication separate from an observed event. A published expansion or job vacancy can justify further research without proving a budget or purchase plan.
4. Check the contact route
Review the role, company relationship and previous account history. Distinguish a general enquiry route from a direct professional contact. Assess the intended communication and relevant exclusions separately from whether the address or number is technically usable. Save uncertain matches for review.
5. Choose the next action
Decide whether to research further, route an existing enquiry, prepare an appropriate introduction or exclude the account. Record the reason and owner. Review the session by the number of defensible next actions it produced, not only the number of rows added. Salesforce’s lead-management controls can support the record structure and routing.
