Define an Opt-In Audience Before Collecting More Records

Audience building begins with a programme worth joining. Decide who the subscription serves and what ongoing information fits that need. A contact-count target should follow the purpose rather than replace it.

Name the relevant need

Describe the problem or subject the programme addresses. Separate broad market reach from people who need these particular messages. A vague invitation to receive offers gives the team little basis for deciding what belongs in the programme.

Set selection rules

Identify relevant recorded preferences and eligibility conditions. Leave unknown information unknown rather than inventing interests from a country or role. Keep exclusions visible alongside the positive criteria.

Explain the relationship

Use a recognisable sender and a consistent subscription promise across collection points. Preserve the source and the wording that applied. An audience definition should remain understandable when a different colleague maintains the list later.

Review suitability over time

Check useful responses, completed actions and early departures by source. Revise the invitation when it attracts a different need from the one the programme can serve. Build on the evidence rather than repeating unsupported inventory or response-rate claims from an older page.
