Opt-in Email Lists: Examine the Subscription Evidence
Opt-in is a description of a choice, not a substitute for evidence about that choice. A buyer should understand who subscribed, what they were told and which communication the record is meant to support.
Ask what the person chose
Review the relevant subscription wording and collection route. Distinguish a request for one newsletter from a broad assumption about third-party marketing. The existence of a tick-box field does not explain the information shown beside it.
Keep the event context together
Identify the date, source and wording reference needed to interpret the record. A source URL or IP field alone may not explain the choice. Review the combined evidence rather than treating any one populated column as conclusive.
Compare scope with the intended use
Check the proposed sender, subject and channel against the recorded context and applicable requirements. Resolve uncertainties before planning a send. A business relationship or prior enquiry may require a different assessment from an explicit subscription.
Preserve later withdrawals
Verify how opt-outs and changed preferences are carried into the working audience. Keep them through delivery refreshes and migrations. Selecting records described as opt-in does not remove the need to maintain the person’s subsequent choices.
