Add a Phone Number to the Right Contact Account

When adding a phone number, choose the account that should maintain it and check whether the person already has a contact card. This keeps the address book easier to correct and avoids creating an unnecessary duplicate.

Search before creating a card

Look for the person or organisation in the relevant contacts account. If a card exists, inspect it before adding another. Keep work and personal relationships distinct where that matters to the way the account is managed.

Enter the number in the right field

Use the phone field and an appropriate label rather than placing the number only in notes. Preserve the country context if it may be called internationally. Keep an extension clearly separated so another person can understand how to reach the destination.

Choose the account deliberately

Check which account the app is saving to, especially when a phone contains work and personal accounts. Use your device’s documented contact controls. A record saved only in one account may not appear on another device as expected.

Inspect after saving

Open the completed card and check the digits and label. If synchronisation is enabled, confirm the intended account receives the change. Saving someone’s contact information for an appropriate purpose does not itself subscribe them to marketing messages.
