A Product Marketing Plan in 5 Working Steps
A product marketing plan connects what the product does with the reasons a defined audience might consider it. Its purpose is to prepare an understandable offer and a workable launch, not simply arrange a burst of publicity.
1. Define the customer and the situation
Describe the task or problem the product addresses and who experiences it. Review the questions asked before a purchase. Identify constraints such as location, compatibility, skills or budget without assuming that every person in a broad demographic has the same need.
2. Explain the position; 3. prepare evidence
State how the product differs from relevant alternatives and which difference matters to the customer. Support important claims with information you can check: specifications, a documented process or appropriately authorised customer evidence. Do not invent a performance result or imply experience with a product that has not been assessed.
4. Prepare the whole delivery path
Check the product page, pricing, availability, ordering process and support arrangements. Give sales and customer-service teams the same scope and limitations. The advertised feature should exist in the product the customer will receive. FTC advertising guidance for the United States emphasises truthful, evidence-based claims; assess the rules relevant to your own markets too.
5. Review understanding after launch
Track the questions customers ask, where purchase attempts fail and which claims create confusion. Separate message problems from product or fulfilment problems. Update the page and team briefing when the evidence supports a change. Judge the launch by useful demand and the ability to deliver, rather than impressions alone.
