Measure the Economics of an Email List Before Expanding It

A mailing list has operating costs whether or not a campaign produces sales. Review the economics of the programme with clear definitions. A large total of stored records does not establish a profitable audience.

Count the relevant costs

Include acquisition, writing, tools, record maintenance and response handling. Identify which costs change with volume and which support the programme as a whole. A low sending fee can hide substantial production and support effort.

Define the useful outcome

Use confirmed outcomes appropriate to the programme and retain attribution limits. Keep revenue separate from contribution after relevant fulfilment costs and refunds. An interaction total is not a substitute for a business result.

Compare similar groups

Review acquisition sources or signup periods under the same definitions and observation window. Account for groups that have had less time to respond. Avoid declaring a recent source superior simply because its first message received more tracked opens.

Choose the next investment deliberately

Identify whether the programme needs a better offer, cleaner process or more relevant reach. Set a bounded change and a review point. Expand when the evidence supports the additional cost rather than assuming every new subscriber creates the same financial value.
