Email Lists vs Email Leads: Understand What You Are Buying

The words “email list” and “email lead” are often used as if they describe the same product. They can refer to very different records. Before comparing prices, ask what event or evidence makes a record part of the advertised category.

Define the record type

A contact record provides information about a person or organisation. A subscriber has joined a described communication programme. An enquiry records a request or expression of interest. A qualified lead has been assessed against stated criteria. Ask the seller to explain which of these it supplies and how that classification can be reviewed.

Request the evidence behind the label

For contact research, examine sources, collection dates, field meanings and update methods. For an enquiry, understand what was requested and which organisation was named. Do not treat a field labelled “opt-in” or “verified” as a complete explanation of the underlying process.

Check the actual workflow

Confirm the intended use, jurisdiction and sending platform before acquisition. Mailchimp prohibits third-party lists under its audience requirements. A purchase agreement or technical address check does not override the service’s policy or establish that recipients requested messages from your organisation.

Agree acceptance criteria

Define required fields, selection filters, duplicates, exclusions and a correction process in writing. Review a representative sample using those criteria and document limitations before purchase. Evaluate cost per usable, appropriate record rather than raw file size. Avoid a vendor comparison that assumes every labelled lead is ready to buy or that a lower price guarantees better value.
