List a Phone Number for International Readers
For international readers, a phone number needs a clear country context. Use the relevant country numbering information rather than adding a plus sign to an unexamined domestic number. Preserve the original while preparing a normalised version.
Identify the destination country
Confirm which country the number belongs to before changing its format. A contact’s current location and a phone number’s country context may differ. Do not guess from a person’s name or employer address.
Check national prefix handling
Domestic trunk prefixes are not handled identically everywhere. Consult the applicable numbering information when converting a number for international display. Do not remove every leading zero using a blanket spreadsheet rule.
Separate an extension from the main line
Keep the extension labelled and apart from the international number. Confirm how the receiving system expects it if the record will be imported. An unlabeled sequence of extra digits can be mistaken for part of the public number.
Test without expanding the claim
Review the resulting display and any call link for the intended route. Retain both the original and normalised values when useful for audit. A numbering-format check does not establish that the line is active, belongs to the named person or may be used for marketing.
