How to Write a US Phone Number for International Contacts

For international presentation, a US phone number is normally written with +1 followed by its ten-digit national number. The plus sign indicates the international format. It is not a claim that a call is free or that every service can reach the destination.

Separate the parts of the number

Keep the country code, area code and local number in the correct order. Do not add an international access prefix such as 011 ahead of +1 in the same stored value. A plus-format number and the digits someone dials from a particular country are related but different representations.

Store extensions in their own field

An office extension is not part of the international public number. Label it separately on a contact page and preserve it separately in exports. Combining extension digits with the main number can cause a form, dialler or contact import to interpret the result incorrectly.

Check the form’s country selector

Some forms expect a country choice and national number in separate fields. Others accept one complete international value. Follow the field’s stated format and inspect the saved result so the country code is not duplicated. Twilio’s E.164 reference describes international formatting; formatting alone does not confirm assignment or reachability.

Test the published route

Check the number with the business or account owner, then test the route using an appropriate calling service. Verify that the displayed number and click-to-call destination agree. Keep the contact’s country as a separate data field rather than relying solely on a prefix to determine location or identity.
