An SMS opt-out is complete when it prevents the next relevant marketing send. A confirmation screen or platform event is only one stage. At Latest Mailing Database, we recommend tracing the withdrawal from the recipient action through to the file or queue used for release.

Map the systems before testing

List the sending service, inbound reply route, webhook receiver, CRM, suppression store and any scheduled export. Identify which system makes the final send decision. If separate agencies or business units upload their own files, include those entry points in the review.

Use numbers controlled by your team for testing. Do not send an unsolicited trial to a prospect to see whether the mechanism works. Keep testing separate from live marketing selections and record the sender identity being evaluated.

Check the actual sender type

A displayed sender name, a reply-capable number and a short code can have different inbound capabilities. Ask the provider how withdrawal reaches the responsible system for each route. A printed instruction is ineffective if the recipient cannot use it.

For Canadian commercial messages, the CRTC’s unsubscribe guidance discusses simple reply or link-based mechanisms. Other countries and providers have their own requirements. This technical test supports the applicable review; it does not establish worldwide legal compliance.

Run a traceable test

Stage What to verify
Recipient action The number can receive the message and use the advertised reply or link.
Inbound event The provider records the withdrawal with the intended sender and contact.
Processing The event reaches the application even if a retry is needed.
Suppression The relevant exclusion is written and available to every release path.
Queued work A pending marketing send is cancelled or rejected before dispatch where required.
New import Reintroducing the same contact does not reactivate marketing.

Keep timestamps for each stage and the provider’s event identifier. Store only the data necessary to diagnose the flow. The release check should be able to explain an event without exposing an entire contact file to everyone investigating it.

Test the failure paths

  • Deliver the same provider event twice and check that it does not create contradictory states.
  • Temporarily fail a controlled receiver and check the documented retry or reconciliation process.
  • Import the contact through an alternative CRM connector.
  • Try a file using a different but equivalent number format.
  • Check a scheduled send created before the opt-out arrived.

A failed webhook should enter a monitored exception queue. Avoid treating an absent event as proof the recipient still wants messages. Give the team a manual hold procedure for withdrawals reported directly to support.

Keep the scope clear

Distinguish a channel-specific subscription from a broader objection. Preserve the wording of the request and route uncertain or broader requests for review. A later import is not evidence of fresh permission, and a technical delivery receipt is not a reversal of an opt-out.

After a provider migration, repeat the test on the new route. Confirm that the old suppression store is included before a first production upload. Keep the old integration disabled until the new release controls have been verified.
