Run an Email Test with a Clear Comparison

An email test should resolve a specific question. Define the difference, audience and outcome before building variations. A platform’s testing feature cannot make an unclear comparison meaningful.

Choose the variable and hypothesis

Decide whether the test concerns a subject, message structure or another bounded change. Explain why the change might help the recipient’s task. Altering the offer, layout and selection together makes the result harder to interpret.

Keep the groups comparable

Use an appropriate assignment method and the same relevant eligibility rules. Avoid sending one version to a fundamentally different source group and attributing the difference solely to the copy. Record the timing and conditions of the test.

Define the outcome in advance

Choose a measure that fits the question and allow an appropriate observation period. Understand how image loading, automated clicks or downstream tracking affect it. Do not repeatedly check an unstable early rate and stop at the first favourable number.

Record the practical conclusion

Keep the settings, result and limitations. A small or inconclusive difference can justify further investigation rather than an absolute winner claim. Retain changes that improve the experience and evidence instead of promising a universal uplift from the test format.
