How to Build Sales Leads Around a Relevant Offer

Start lead generation with a problem your business can address and an audience you can serve. Then choose a route that allows that audience to learn, ask a question or request a next step. A contact record becomes more useful when its source and context travel with it.

Define the decision you support

Write the business or customer situation, the service area and the practical question your offer answers. Identify what somebody needs before speaking with sales. A technical buyer may need specifications; another audience may need a clear explanation of service scope or availability.

Choose acquisition routes deliberately

Use relevant content, events, referrals, customer enquiries or targeted account research according to the audience and purpose. Record which route produced each record. Do not classify every content download as a buying request or combine research contacts and inbound enquiries without identifying the difference.

Make capture and routing usable

Ask for enough information to fulfil the request without turning the form into an unnecessary survey. Give the record a responsible owner and a status with a written meaning. Keep the source, request and current communication eligibility available to the receiving team. Lead-management systems can help enforce these fields, but the definitions need to be agreed by people.

Review acceptance and outcomes

Track whether sales accepted the handover, what information was missing and why a record was unsuitable. Compare sources using equivalent definitions and a consistent review period. Expand the routes that produce useful conversations at an acceptable cost. More names are not progress if the same handover problems prevent the team from using them.
