Review Backlink Data Before Drawing a Conclusion

A backlink report lists links a service has discovered. Its coverage and update cycle affect what appears. Open the source page and inspect the relationship before interpreting a count or score as evidence of a useful reference.

Check the actual placement

Read the referring page and the sentence containing the link. Identify the publisher, subject and intended reader. A navigation entry, paid placement and editorial citation are different relationships and should not be treated as equivalent recommendations.

Check the destination

Follow the link and record redirects or failures. Review whether the anchor accurately describes the page reached. A relevant source can still contain an obsolete link after a site reorganisation.

Understand report limits

Compare equivalent exports and time periods. A newly discovered link is not necessarily newly published, and a missing entry is not by itself proof that the page removed the link. Keep the observation and the tool’s date distinguishable.

Choose proportionate action

Repair misleading or broken placements you control and preserve useful references. Review suspected manipulative arrangements against Google’s spam policies. Do not purchase an authority promise merely because a report contains a low score.
