Telemarketing Lead Lists: What to Check Before Use
A telemarketing lead list is a selection of contact records prepared for a calling activity. Its usefulness depends on the audience, the reason for contact and the controls applied before dialling. A large record count alone says little about whether the selection fits your campaign.
Define consumer and business audiences separately
A consumer campaign targets individuals in a personal capacity. A business campaign targets organisations and relevant professional responsibilities. Specify which is intended before reviewing names or phone numbers. A mobile number or a job title alone does not establish the legal classification of every call.
Review the fields and their meaning
Check country, number format, number type where known, source and update information. For business records, distinguish the company switchboard from a named contact’s direct line. Keep extensions separate. Ask what a verification label means and which checks were actually performed; a formatted number is not proof that the intended person still uses it.
Prepare the calling exclusions
Review applicable calling rules, permissions and suppression requirements for the destination, audience and calling technology. Apply the organisation’s own do-not-call requests to the current selection. The FTC’s United States Telemarketing Sales Rule guidance addresses calling restrictions and responsibilities; it is not a worldwide rulebook or a blanket approval for business calls.
Agree a usable delivery
Set required columns, duplicate handling, file format and a process for disputed records. Keep the selection version and exclusion date with the campaign. Judge quality by accurate, relevant records and the handling of corrections, rather than an unsupported promise that every contact will answer or become a customer.
