What Alternative Data Means in Financial Research

In financial research, alternative data refers to information used alongside established financial disclosures and market information. The useful question is what the observations measure and whether they support the research task. A marketing contact file answers a different question.

Define the observation

Describe the event or activity represented by each row and the population it covers. Separate a directly observed event from a modelled estimate. A dataset’s size cannot explain whether the observed population represents the market being studied.

Preserve the timeline

Keep the event date, publication date and date the information became available distinguishable. A retrospective test can look misleading if it uses a value before a researcher could actually have obtained it. Document revisions rather than silently replacing the original series.

Review provenance and permitted use

Investigate collection, licensing and the applicable review process before using a feed. The SEC has identified alternative-data due-diligence issues in its examination work. A commercial licence is not a reason to skip questions about provenance or sensitive information.

Keep contact acquisition separate

At Latest Mailing Database, a contact brief concerns the people or organisations relevant to outreach. It does not establish a financial signal, a trading advantage or an investment outcome. Assess research datasets against the observation needed, not an unrelated contact count.
