How to Qualify B2B Prospects Before Outreach

A useful prospect is more than a reachable name. Qualification asks whether the organisation fits your offer, whether the contact has a relevant responsibility and what evidence supports a conversation. Keep those questions separate so a strong match on one does not hide a weak match on another.

Write the company-fit rules first

Describe the organisations you can serve: business activity, geography, operating model and practical requirements. Separate essentials from preferences. A business outside your service area should not receive a high rating merely because it is large. Record the reason for rejecting a company as carefully as the reason for accepting it.

Check responsibility behind the title

Read the role in the context of the company. A director can manage different functions in different organisations. Identify who would evaluate the problem, who would operate the solution and who would approve a purchase. Leave responsibility unknown where the available information does not establish it.

Distinguish evidence from inference

An enquiry, a published project and an employee’s job title provide different kinds of information. Record the source and date of an observed fact. Put a possible implication in a separate research field. Salesforce’s qualification guidance considers needs, budget, authority and fit; unanswered questions should remain visible rather than being filled with guesses.

Choose the next action

Route a clear enquiry to the appropriate sales owner. Put a plausible account with missing information into research. Exclude unsuitable accounts and retain the reason so they are not repeatedly reintroduced. Before outreach, check the contact route, previous objections and the rules supporting the proposed communication. Qualification improves prioritisation; it does not promise a reply or a purchase.
